May is Hunger Awareness Month!

When school ends, many families lose access to meals. Food insecurity is already at record levels in Pierce County. EFN’s food pantry partners served over 3.7 million visits in 2025. Take action with us by exploring the month’s volunteer opportunities:

  • Hunger Walk – Saturday, May 2, 8 – 11 AM: One of our biggest and most inspiring community events of the year is just around the corner—Hunger Walk! This annual event brings together hundreds of community members who believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food. There are several ways to get involved by volunteering at the event on May 2. Find a list at the link below!

  • Letter Carriers’ Food Drive: Saturday, May 9: This is one of the most impactful single-day food drives in the country, and we’re proud to be part of it each year. With the help of our incredible volunteers, we’re able to collect and distribute thousands of pounds of food to our neighbors facing hunger. Find out about the two main volunteer opportunities available at this event at the link below.

Without the help of volunteers, it would not be possible for EFN to distribute over 1 million pounds of food every month to food pantries across Pierce County. Whether you prefer to volunteer solo or as a group, enjoy community time or quiet time, there’s a need for you here!

VOLUNTEERING AT THE REPACK PROJECT

Repack Project volunteers transform bulk food shipments into family-sized portions that are ready to help feed the community! At our Lakewood Distribution Center, you and your fellow volunteers might find yourselves bagging up oats, pasta, or rice or packing local produce bags for our Home Delivery recipients. Once repackaged the food is ready to go out to the 75+ Pierce County food pantries, meal sites, and shelters that we serve.

The Repack Project is designed for teams of 8-15 volunteers. You can reserve a session just for your group or join other community members during a scheduled session for Individuals and Families.

This volunteer opportunity is open to individuals aged 12 and older. Volunteers aged 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

VOLUNTEERING WITH THE HOME DELIVERY PROGRAM

In order to ensure distribution of food to the most vulnerable in our community, EFN launched the Home Delivery program. This program supports community members who have barriers to accessing their local food pantries.

EFN’s Home Delivery Program is looking for volunteer drivers to help us increase the number of families we serve across Pierce County! With your support, we can deliver boxes filled with fresh, nutritious food directly to homes, ensuring more families have access to the food they need.

Volunteer Details:

  • When: Tuesday and Friday mornings (afternoons also available)
  • Duration: Approximately 2 hours
  • What: Deliver boxes of fresh food from our distribution center in Lakewood to homes throughout Pierce County

As a Volunteer Driver, you’ll have the chance to directly impact the lives of local families while enjoying a fulfilling and rewarding experience. Must be 18 or older to participate.
