From the Fields

With some slightly warmer temperatures at EFN’s Mother Earth Farm, it finally feels like spring might just be on the way. Our orchard is full of swelling buds and flowers and it looks like its going to be a big fruit year for us!

Out in the fields, we are continuing to harvest kale and carrots for our food pantry partners. We have decided to slow things down a bit on our harvests to make sure we are able to provide an adequate amount of food for our winter partners. We are looking forward to starting our volunteer season as well. There are opportunities to get involved at the farm through Adopt-A-Row, which kicks off early March.

By far our biggest task for the month is getting ready for the crew. Each year, we work with 8-9 currently incarcerated people from the Washington Corrections Center for Women. Prep for the crew involves getting the farm cleaned up, finalizing changes in production systems, and getting education materials together.

We also have some staffing updates! We’ve brought on a new Assistant Farm Manager, Jesse. Jesse has been phenomenal so far and brings four years of production knowledge. We are lucky to continue to work with Sam, our seasonal assistant from last year who will add depth and breadth to the farm team coming back for year two. We are thrilled to have Sam back on the team!
