Food for Thought: Fresh Food Revolution

A Message from EFN’s Executive Director

Spring is arriving and it is most visible at EFN’s Mother Earth Farm. Plants are being seeded, fields are being turned, and buds are appearing in our orchard. What does this mean for the emergency food supply system in Pierce County? It means over 100,000 pounds of fresh produce will be provided to our 71 partner food pantries and meal sites from our very own farm. This offers our neighbors in need access to fresh produce which is healthy and nutritionally dense.

Recently the Tacoma News Tribune featured an article “Fresh Tacoma produce beats a Trump food box any day” and we could not agree more. As the federal government grapples with potential changes to the budget, what we know is that our families that rely on SNAP Benefits (Food Stamps) are already not receiving enough benefits to feed their families for the month. As reported in the Washington Post, “Food stamp benefits are already too low in 99 percent of U.S. counties”. What we know is that the need is growing not shrinking and we will be here to help.

How can you be part of it? We are currently recruiting individuals, businesses, and service groups to be part of our Adopt-a-Row program. Your group would volunteer 1-2 times each month at EFN’s Mother Earth Farm thorough an entire season and experience the deep satisfaction of nurturing vegetables all the way from seed through harvesting for the food pantry. Be part of the “Fresh Food Revolution” by donating time and resources to EFN’s Mother Earth Farm!

In Gratitude,

Helen McGovern-Pilant
Executive Director
