Help End Hunger—Volunteer!

Want to make a huge difference in the lives of children and families in Pierce County? Emergency Food Network has three programs, the Repack Project, the Mother Earth Farm and the Cannery Project, that rely on people like you to keep them going.

Who Volunteers?

Kids from preschool to college volunteer at the Farm. Companies such as Boeing and Weyerhaeuser form teams to go out and plant seeds at the Mother Earth Farm or can applesauce at the Cannery. Members of service clubs like the Elk’s Lodge #174 have volunteered every month at the Cannery since the Project began in 1996.  Volunteer groups repack product in the warehouse as needed. Where will you help?

THE REPACK PROJECT
In  2007, the Emergency Food Network began a frozen food repack project in the Warehouse Distribution Center one Saturday each month and during the week as volunteer groups are available. Bulk frozen product – corn, peas, mixed vegetables, etc. - will be packed in one and two pound bags for distribution to food banks in Pierce County. Warm clothes are recommended and closed toe shoes are required. Gloves, aprons, etc. are provided.

To volunteer for the Repack Project, please call EFN at (253) 584-1040 or e-mail joanna_efn@hotmail.com.  Volunteers must pre-register to volunteer.

THE CANNERY PROJECT
Join us on a Tuesday  from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. to help us can food for hungry children and families in Pierce County. Volunteer crews can and label produce that is received in bulk such as corn, apples, pears, and carrots. You’ll take fresh product and clean it, cut it, cook it, and can it. The EFN staff supervisor and the Cannery Manager will provide a brief training on safety, sanitation, and canning. We will supply all of the materials needed and lunch. Transportation can be arranged.

Wear comfortable clothes reflecting the weather. Generally crews wear T-shirts and jeans and rubber-soled tennis or casual shoes. If the weather is cold, a sweatshirt will be appropriate.

To volunteer at the Cannery, please call EFN at 253.584.1040.
