Food Stamp Challenge
April 14th - 20th

The Pierce County Food Coalition, comprised of emergency food providers throughout Pierce County, is sponsoring a Food Stamp Challenge April 14 – 20. Local elected officials, including Tacoma City Councilwoman Lauren Walker, and directors of local emergency food providers will live on the nationwide average week food stamp benefit of $21 for the week. Like many food stamp recipients, participants will also be encouraged to visit both a local food bank and hot meal site one time during the week to help them stretch their food dollars for the week.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for administering the Food Stamp Program, the nationwide average monthly benefit in was $94.05, approximately $3 per day. The Food Stamp Program helps more than 26 million low-income people purchase food for themselves and their families.  The program is designed as a safety net to help ensure people have access to food during difficult times, with the majority of people leaving the program within nine months.  More than half of food stamp recipients are children and eight percent are over 60 years of age.

The Emergency Food Network asks participants in the Food Stamp Challenge to keep and share a journal of their experiences eating with a food purchase budget of $21 for the week.

Please submit copies of journals or reflections to:

Empty Bowls
Sunday, October 12th

Empty Bowls is a project that offers the arts and anti-hunger communities a rare and unique chance to unite their efforts. The MetroParks Foundation, West End Neighborhood Council, and Emergency Food Network have joined together to host this event and help fill some of the “empty bowls” in Pierce County. Pacific Northwest Potters, volunteers throughout the arts community and emergency food system, the Tacoma Weavers’ Guild, local students, local restaurants and many more caring individuals work together each year to make this event a success. Come and pick out one bowl - or ten - and matching placemats, and then join us for a bowl of soup served by some of the best chefs in town. Bowls are $10 each, placemat prices vary, and soup is served (in a separate bowl) with each purchase. For more information call EFN at (253) 584-1040.
