Draft Horse Plow at Mother Earth Farm April 5th marks the annual Draft Horse Plow at the Mother Earth Farm. Our good friends from the Hames & Tugs Draft Horse Club return each year for this exciting community event. Join us and watch these amazing folks work their incredible horses on our eight-acre organic farm. We’ll host a potluck lunch around the noon hour, so bring a covered dish, a lawn chair and your camera! You can also take home some greens as part of the L’Arche Farm & Gardens plant sale. Carpooling is strongly recommended, as parking is limited at the Farm.
Food
Stamp Challenge
The Pierce County Food Coalition, comprised of emergency food providers throughout Pierce County, is sponsoring a Food Stamp Challenge April 14 – 20. Local elected officials, including Tacoma City Councilwoman Lauren Walker, and directors of local emergency food providers will live on the nationwide average week food stamp benefit of $21 for the week. Like many food stamp recipients, participants will also be encouraged to visit both a local food bank and hot meal site one time during the week to help them stretch their food dollars for the week.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for administering the Food Stamp Program, the nationwide average monthly benefit in was $94.05, approximately $3 per day. The Food Stamp Program helps more than 26 million low-income people purchase food for themselves and their families. The program is designed as a safety net to help ensure people have access to food during difficult times, with the majority of people leaving the program within nine months. More than half of food stamp recipients are children and eight percent are over 60 years of age.
The Emergency Food Network asks participants in the Food Stamp Challenge to keep and share a journal of their experiences eating with a food purchase budget of $21 for the week.
