Partner Opportunity – Be a Cooking Demonstrator! @ WSU Extension Office

Do you like working with people and helping others improve their health and wellness?

You could be a Cooking Demonstrator at your local food pantry!

Colorful Cooking Made Easy is a partnership of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, WSU Extension, United Way of Pierce County and food pantries across Pierce County. As a volunteer Cooking Demonstrator you will be able to provide food pantry guests with cooking tips and recipe suggestions to help them incorporate the wonderful healthy food options available each week at the food pantry.

There are two orientation and trainings two choose from this month!

Letter Carriers Food Drive: Driving Teams @ Post Office Branches in Tacoma, Lakewood, and Fife
May 13 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

TSOHhis year marks the 25th Annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive! For Emergency Food Network, this single day is one of the most important food drives of the year. We receive close to 300,000 pounds of food, enough to stock Pierce County food bank shelves through the summer.

To help make this day a success, our friends at the United States Post Office need our help! Volunteer Driving Teams are needed to help pick food up in the community (teams need a personal vehicle and a group of 2 – 4 volunteers; route maps and safety identification vests are provided).

Post Office Branch locations and number of teams needed:

  • Fife (5 driving teams)
  • Central Tacoma (10 driving teams)
  • University Place (10 driving teams)
  • Lakewood (2 driving teams)Filled!

Volunteer at the Hunger Walk & 5K Run! @ Fort Steilacoom Park

More than 100 volunteer positions are available at this year’s Hunger Walk & 5K Run! On Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 volunteers are needed to help with everything from setting up the route to cheering runners on. Positions are available for individuals, groups, and youth ages 9 and up!

Volunteer with EFN at Taste of Tacoma! @ Point Defiance Park
Jun 23 – Jun 25 all-day

Are you headed out to Taste of Tacoma this year (June 23-25 at Point Defiance Park)? Make sure to stop by this year’s brand new attraction, South Sound Bites! Not only will Tacoma restaurants be featured through 5-course entree/plate meals for only $16 (check out the menu here) but the event will also help support EFN! South Sound Bites attendees can make a monetary or canned food donation to EFN…and EFN will be there to accept these donations! Which means…you can volunteer with EFN at this year’s Taste of Tacoma!

Volunteer Descriptions and Times
Volunteers and EFN staff will collect donations on all 3-days (June 23-25) while helping to bus tables at the South Sound Bites arena and checking in/out bikes, strollers, skateboards, or anything else with wheels at the Bike Corral.

Other Volunteer Details

Minimum age: The minimum age to volunteer at this event is 16. Youth ages 14 and 15 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Experience needed: None! Just the willingness to perform all tasks (bus tables, check wheeled items in/out, collect donations).

Qualifications: All volunteers need to be able to smile, be friendly and outgoing, and feel comfortable thanking strangers for making donations to benefit our community!

Breaking Hunger Scorekeepers – AM/PM/Full Day Sessions @ Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club

At our Breaking Hunger Trap Shooting Tournament participants shoot clay pigeons and arrows to fight hunger! This is a fun and unique fundraising event that would not be possible without the help from volunteers. Volunteers help shooters keep score and manage the archery station. A BBQ lunch is provided!

When: Friday, August 11, 2017 with three time frames to choose from:

  • Morning Session: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Afternoon Session: 12:00 – 4:00 pm
  • Full Day Session: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Where: Gig Harbor Sportsman Club, Gig Harbor

Volunteer Positions:

  • Trap Shooting Scorers: Four volunteers keep score as the participants shoot at clay pigeons. Scorers have the best seat in the house as they are placed on an elevated chair giving them a bird’s eye view of the action. This is a fun, fast-paced, action-packed role!
  • Archery Attendants: We are looking for two volunteers to assist the archery station managers with keeping score, gathering arrows, and setting up targets. Be expecting some great laughs at this station!

There are many ways to share your Abundance in support of Emergency Food Network! This year’s event will feature a delicious dinner, exciting live and silent auctions, and a meaningful opportunity to give back to your community. Proceeds from this special night will provide emergency food for our neighbors in Pierce County.

Volunteers are needed to help us with set up! Tables need unloaded, chairs set up, linens put out, and decorations displayed. A continental breakfast will be provided.

Help Set Up at Empty Bowls! @ Charles Wright Academy

Empty Bowls is an annual fundraising event where attendees can choose from more than 1,500 bowls to purchase for the home and as holiday gifts. Ceramic, glass, and wooden bowls are donated to EFN by local artists. After purchasing bowls, guests are served a bowl of soup (in a separate bowl) donated by local restaurants.

Volunteers are needed to help with event set up! Tables need unloaded, bowls need displayed, and the dining room needs assembled and decorated!

Volunteer Session: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Volunteer positions are also available at the event from 12:00 – 4:30 pm! Go here to learn more!
