The Cannery Project, a partnership with Northwest Harvest, the Independent Food Distribution Network, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Bishop’s Storehouse in Kent, began in 1996. The purpose of this project is to can and re-pack fresh and frozen foods. This product is then distributed to local food banks, increasing the shelf life of otherwise perishable goods and reducing the need to purchase canned food. This project relies heavily upon volunteers from local service clubs, universities and businesses. In 2008 it produced over 20,000 cans of corn, carrots, and applesauce for distribution by the EFN warehouse crew.
Volunteer at the Cannery!
Join us to help us can food for hungry children and families in Pierce County. Volunteer crews can and label produce that is received in bulk such as corn, apples, pears, and carrots. You’ll take fresh product and clean it, cut it, cook it, and can it. A brief training on safety, sanitation, and canning will be provided. We will supply all of the materials needed and lunch.
