The Stadium Bowl in Tacoma, Washington will be 100 years old in September of 2010. To help commemorate this auspicious event, EFN and community leaders are sponsoring an attempt to bring attention to hunger relief and break the current world record for a food drive in a 24-hour period. Our goal is to SHATTER the current world record of 509,000 pounds, held by a Canadian group, with a target of 1,000,000 pounds of food. Twenty five semi-trucks full of food will assure that we reach our goal. Already, corporate and civic groups are committing to sponsoring entire truckloads!
The Bowl, which was built in 1910, has hosted concerts and events from Louis Armstrong, John Phillips Souza, Babe Ruth and William Jennings Bryan to United States Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding. The Bowl has always been a place to make history so it is the PERFECT place to set this world record.
The event will kick off on Friday, September 17 at 4pm following a parade. At 6pm there will be a homecoming football game between Stadium High School and Bellarmine Prep High School. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items with them to the game. There will be a friendly rivalry between the schools to see who collects the most food to begin the food drive.
During the subsequent 24 hours, numerous community events will highlight the bowl’s impressive history while simultaneously bringing attention to the statewide need for hunger relief. A partnership between Northwest Harvest, Coastal Harvest, and EFN (all three members of the Independent Food Distribution Network) will establish pickup sites throughout King and Pierce County to broaden community participation.
YOU have the opportunity to be officially associated with this record. Here’s how:
Bring food to the site.
Drop food off at a designated pre-event pick up site. This food will be delivered to the pick up site and be counted towards the total.
Text “HUNGER” to 85944 during the food drive to donate $10 towards the record. The monies collected are accounted for in real time and will be used to purchase preordered food to be delivered to the pick up site within the time frame. This purchased food will then be added into the totals for the record.
Sponsor a full or partially full semi-truck of food to be counted in the total.
Participate in the kickoff parade with a vehicle or vehicles full of food to be counted during the drive.
Let’s smash the record!
