Mother Earth Farm Update

December brings slower and shorter days to EFN’s Mother Earth Farm. We are continuing to harvest and distribute food to our food pantry partners, but have slimmed down to five food pantries during the winter months. The winter harvest list includes tatsoi, mizuna, kale, chard, and carrots. Our greens tend to taste even sweeter over the winter months. In preparation for winter, plants store extra sugars in their leaves and roots.

Outside of our normal farm activities, we are reviewing farm systems and plans from 2017. We are excited about changes for next year, including our irrigation system, our cultivating tractor program, and our wash-pack station.

Our two seasonal assistants, Samira and Alvi, have been bravely working in the winter weather as well. A big thank you to both of them for their work and commitment to feeding folks in Pierce County! We are also excited to announce that we have hired on a new Assistant Farm Manager, Jesse Honiker. Jesse comes to us by way of Full Belly Farm and we are excited to loop her into our work and have her contribute to the farm.

Happy winter!
