Draft Horses and Antique Tractors to Plow Fields at Mother Earth Farm

Spring has sprung at Emergency Food Network’s Mother Earth Farm and it’s time to prepare the soil for planting. What better way to do this than the old fashioned way – with draft horses and antique tractors!

On Saturday, April 2, attendees of EFN’s annual Draft Horse Plow event will turn back time to the earlier days of farming at EFN’s Mother Earth Farm (15208 102nd St E, Puyallup 98374). Come see skilled horse drivers guide their beautiful animals through the soil and watch the antique tractors in action as they plow the fields in preparation for growing 100,000 pounds of organic produce for our neighbors in need.

This FREE event is fun for all ages! Come anytime on April 2, between 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The horse teams and antique tractors will be plowing throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to check EFN’s website for updates to this event as it could be cancelled due to inclement weather. The teams of draft horses are unable to plow the fields in muddy conditions.

Emergency Food Network operates the 8-acre organic Mother Earth Farm, managed by Anika Moran. This event is a truly unique opportunity to see community supported sustainable agriculture at its best. Mother Earth Farm grows more than 40 varieties of vegetables, as well as fruit trees. Bees are kept on site to pollinate, and their honey is collected for distribution as well. Vegetables and fruit grown at Mother Earth Farm are harvested and given fresh to food programs around Pierce County, often on the same day that it is harvested.

An average of 118,000 children, seniors, and adults visit feeding programs in Pierce County each month. In 2015, Emergency Food Network provided 16 million pounds of food to 70 food banks, meal sites, and shelters throughout Pierce County.
