               Statistics

The Emergency Food Network (EFN) has been working since 1982 "to provide a reliable food supply so that no person in Pierce County goes hungry." Each month in Pierce County, more than 130,000 people seek emergency food assistance. EFN provides food and other essentials at no cost to over 70 food banks, hot meal sites and shelters for distribution to low-income families and individuals.

The Emergency Food Network is comprised of the Distribution Center in Lakewood, the Cannery Project in Kent,  the 8-acre organic Mother Earth Farm in Orting, and the Orchard in Roy. Through these  operations, EFN distributed more than $13.3 million worth of food and other essentials in 2007. The Cannery produced 40,000 cans of produce and the Mother Earth Farm harvested more than 162,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Emergency Food Network operates with a staff of ten full-time and one part-time employees. It is joined in its work by a dedicated corps of 1,600 volunteers who gave more than 18,000 hours to the organization last year. Due to a low administrative and fundraising overhead of 3.4 percent EFN is able to distribute $12 dollars worth of food to local feeding programs for every dollar donated.

These innovative efforts combine to make the Emergency Food Network the only non-profit emergency food distribution center in the country able to take food straight from the ground to the tables of those in need.

Please join us in the fight against hunger.

National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive
Saturday, May 10th

In 2007, Pierce County letter carriers collected 344,766 pounds of food from postal customers.  Food collected in this one-day drive helped provide more than 700,000 meals to over 72,000 children, seniors, and adults in our community.

The NALC Food Drive is the Largest food drive in Pierce  County, offering all residents of the community the opportunity to engage in the local fight against huger.  Since 1994, this food drive has collected more than 3 million pounds of food for hungry individuals and families in Pierce County.  Letter carriers donate all food to the Emergency Food Network or a local food bank, where it is given to an individual or family in need.

Donate:  Place bags of non-perishable food by your mailbox and your letter carrier will donate it to a local emergency food site.  It's that easy!

Volunteer:  We are in need of volunteers at several locations throughout Pierce County to help move donated food off of mail trucks and load donated food into emergency food trucks.  Volunteers are needed from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.  Stay for one hour or four hours - The choice is yours!

If you are interested in volunteering contact Joanna at joanna_efn@hotmail.com or 253-584-1040.  We will match you with a volunteer location near you.

We hope you will join us in making this year’s food drive just as successful as years past.
